WhatsApp is rolling out four new WhatsApp group features to help people manage important messages and catch up on missed discussions. In active group chats, conversations can accumulate hundreds of messages within a few hours. That rapid volume makes finding specific information or tracking messages that need direct attention difficult. The latest update addresses that problem by introducing private Group Status posts, permanent message pinning, an expanded option for sharing recent chat history, and a dedicated filter for mentions and direct replies.

Group status and permanent pins
The new Group Status feature allows people to share brief updates exclusively with members of an individual group. Regular WhatsApp Status updates reach contacts selected from your address book. Group Status confines those posts to the specific conversation thread. Members of the group can view updates, reply with reactions, and post their own updates to the conversation. All Group Status content automatically disappears after 24 hours.
WhatsApp is also lifting the expiration limit on pinned messages. Previously, users had to choose a fixed duration for keeping a message pinned at the top of a conversation. The latest update adds an option to keep messages pinned indefinitely. That change helps groups keep important notes, rules, and announcements visible for longer periods without expiring.
Message history and mention filters
Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a feature that let users share recent message history when adding someone to a group. The company is now extending that capability by letting members share those earlier messages even after the new participant has joined. Tapping the person’s name in the conversation sends the past messages, which remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
Another addition is a dedicated filter created for mentions and replies. It organizes unread group conversations where someone mentioned you, replied directly to your message, or used the @all tag. With this filter in place, users do not have to check every unread group conversation to locate messages specifically directed at them.
The messaging service has also worked on improving message discovery through a search shortcut introduced recently on iPhones. Separately, scheduled messages are undergoing testing in preview builds, though that feature has not yet arrived on the stable version of the app.
